UMTS Technology- A Third Generation Mobile Telephony System, Basics and Uses |Frequency Band for UMTS |UMTS Phone & Data Card

UMTS:

UMTS Stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System developed within 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project).  UMTS is the Third Generation mobile telephony system for networks based on GSM standards. We also call it 3G acronym for Third Generation. UMTS enables both Voice and Data services and offers greater spectral efficiency and bandwidth than its predecessor, GSM (Global System for Mobile communication). In simple it is mobile technology having greater bandwidth that will deliver information at the data rate up-to 2Mbit/sec. Through wireless and satellite systems UMTS offers Text & multimedia to other wireless devices & computers over the world. Wide-band code division multiple access (W-CDMA) radio access technology is mainly used in it. In UMTS a packet-switched connection, using the Internet Protocol (IP) is used.

Uses of UMTS:

UMTS provides users a high speed Internet connection. After full implementation of it, users can access World Wide Web in their phones & computers at every-where. It provides better experience of a lot of services either you’re travelling or home. It does it through terrestrial wireless and satellite transmissions.

Frequency Bands:

Frequency bands defined standards are: 1885–2025 MHz for uploading & 2110–2200 MHz for downloading. But many countries differ from this standard as some of these frequencies are already allocated there for other uses.

  • In United States 1710–1755 MHz and 2110–2155 MHz band is used.
  • 2100 MHz is the most widely deployed UMTS band for communication. In 2100 MHz frequency band, we use around 2100 MHz for downloading and around 1900 MHz for uploading. This band allocated in Europe, North America and most of Asia.

 UMTS Phones & Data Cards:

Phones and data cards for it are highly portable as they have been designed to roam easily onto other UMTS networks. Almost all 3G phones are UMTS/GSM Dual-Mode devices. So if phone travels outside UMTS coverage during a call, the call may be transparently handed off to available GSM coverage. Users prefer UMTS now a day’s for its higher data speed and better performance. Hence most of the phones are coming in market with 3G supporting capability.
